julie & julia

i just finished reading this particular book. adding this to my favorite collection. superb! and the movie, its awesome! makes me wanna get married and cook! hahahaha! :P

Julie & Julia
this book is based on two true stories, of two different ladies - Julia Child and Julie Powell, both of whom wrote memoirs - find their lives intertwined. Though separated by time and space, both women are at loose ends, until they discover that with the right combination of passion, fearlessness and butter, anything is possible.

In 1949, Julia Child is in Paris, the wife of a diplomat, wondering how to spend her days. She tries hat making, bridge, and then cooking lessons at Cordon Bleu. There she discovers her passion.

In 2002, Julie Powell, about to turn 30 and underemployed with an unpublished novel, decides to cook her way through "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" (the book written by Julia Child after spending her days learning how to cook and master it in France, becoming the only American to ever publish a French cooking book in English. i think), in a year and to blog about it.

We go back and forth between these stories of two women learning to cook and finding success. Sympathetic, loving husbands support them both, and friendships, too, add zest.

At first she thinks it will be easy. But as she moves from the simple Potage Parmentier (potato soup) into the more complicated realm of aspics and crepes, she realizes there's more to Mastering the Art of French Cooking than meets the eye. With Julia's stern warble always in her ear, Julie haunts the local butcher, buying kidneys and sweetbreads. She sends her husband on late-night runs for yet more butter and rarely serves dinner before midnight. She discovers how to mold the perfect Orange Bavarian, the trick to extracting marrow from bone, and the intense pleasure of eating liver.

And somewhere along the line she realizes she has turned her kitchen into a miracle of creation and cuisine. She has eclipsed her life's ordinariness through spectacular humor, hysteria, and perseverance.

this is a typical story of a normal person becoming extraordinary. from just a temp, she made her own mission - to complete 524 recipes in 365 days, and blogs about it. she's discovered that she has become very addicted to all this and is tiny bit afraid of what's going to happen to her routine for the past year when she's done with all the recipes? haha. hilarious. the fits she gets trying to whip up something from basic, throwing tantrums when she doesn't get it right, despite having julia child explaining things as if they were not a hassle. fun fun fun book

watch the movie! i highly recommend! :)

xoxo
